Bigfoot Exists!
Some regions across America have their own distinct versions of urban legends. Desert states such as Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico have numerous places where UFO's and extraterrestrials supposedly visit. In the Pacific Northwest, the favorite urban legend of choice is Bigfoot. Bigfoot has reached the big time enough in Washington State to be the mascot of the Seattle Sonics. This mascot goes by the name of Squatch, which is short Sasquatch, the Native American word for Bigfoot. I've never understood the connection between the name "Sonics", and having Bigfoot as a mascot. Perhaps Bigfoot secretly works as an engineer for Boeing.
Apparently there are more than a few people who fervently maintain that Bigfoot exists. After all there is the Patterson-Gimlin film that captured Bigfoot for posterity back in 1967. This film's been debated by scientists, and been the subject of a few documentaries, for 36 years. I've seen a few of these documentaries, and they really are quite interesting. According to the film makers, the Northwest Indians have legends going back many years of a shy, gentle, furry, human like creature that stands upright and reaches a height of 7 feet or more. Many caucasians confirmed the Indian legends with their own sightings and photographs. By the end of these documentaries, it was clear that the makers wanted you to believe in at least the possibility of Bigfoot's existence. I came away believing that Bigfoot shows how powerful boredom, a gorilla suit, a movie camera and a case of Olympia beer can be on the human psyche.
Unfortunately the picture above is not a prize winning masterpiece offering indisputable evidence of Bigfoot. I took this picture in the tiny Washington State village of Index. This is a little roadside attraction where you can look at beautiful mountain scenery, drink a great latte, and see where the movie Harry and the Hendersons was filmed. This little known movie was made in the late 80's, and is about a family that accidentally ends up living with Bigfoot. I'm sure your half way out the door to Blockbuster video right now to rent this, so I won't tell you anymore about it.
If your want to know more about Bigfoot, here is an article from Wikipedia in which you can trace Bigfoot back to the legends of the Abominable Snowman and Yeti of the Himalayas. Here is a link to the only organization devoted to the scientific study of Bigfoot.
